Would you believe it if I tell you that Sulyap: A Musical Journey of Timeless Philippine Classics and Broadway Excerpts was a treat for all 5 basic senses? Lipa City experienced a treat last Saturday, September 15, at the Aquamarine Center as we were able to watch and witness world-class performances right here in our city.

Brought to Us by Rotary Club of Lipa and the Lipa Rotaract

This event was made possible by the Rotary Club of Lipa headed by its Inspiring President, Mr. Rolly Del Rio. Also stepping up to the task is the Lipa Rotaract headed by its Inspiring President, Ms. Mary Rose Del Rio. Sulyap is also co-presented by Montage.

The event was hosted by Miss Philippines Earth 2013 Angelee Delos Reyes and Juan Dubai’s Mariz Del Rio.

The event is for the benefit of the Autism Society Philippines – Lipa Chapter and other flagship projects by the Rotary Club of Lipa.

What a Treat, it was!

Sulyap was directed by Rommel Serrano, with Mandi Ferrer serving as the musical director. Being a musical, it was obviously a treat for our sense of hearing as voices of performers with different voice types serenaded the adoring crowd. Soloists namely Jinky May Jadulco (Soprano), Alegria Ferrer (Soprano), Jec Retulla (Baritone), Vince Conrad (Tenor) and Homer George Mendoza (Tenor) performed timeless Philippine classics and Broadway excerpts that made the crowd embrace our culture, while enjoying what the rest of the world has to offer.

Our local performers Splendio Tritus and The Lipa Chorale Ensemble held their own, as they provided intermission numbers that made their fellow Lipeños proud.

Our sense of sight was also treated to quite a spectacle, with colorful performances by the Kalilayan Folkloric Group that brought us back to the Philippines of old. Ballet dancers Julafer Fegarido and Gladys Baybayan also wowed the crowd with Grand Jetes, Soubresauts and more to complement the singing voices of the soloists.

Before the event, our senses of smell and taste were simulated thanks to the heavy cocktails provided by Margarita The Event Caterer.

As for the last sense, our sense of touch was touched, as we bore witness to how rich and diverse the country’s culture is. Hopefully, this event opened the eyes of many for us to support cultural events such as this.
