Lipa City – As My City, My SM, My Art continues its cultural journey around the Philippines, its stop at SM City Lipa last July 13-20 made it very special as the launch highlighted the importance of mentorship and the next generation artists.   Two of the featured artists are Jonathan Olazo and Paulina Luz Sotto. Jonathan is the son of Master Artist Romulo Olazo while Paulina Luz-Sotto is the granddaughter of National Artist Arturo Luz.

Emphasizing the importance of mentorship, seven videos representing different stories of artists were shown.  The first video is dedicated to the Fine Arts students and faculty members of Batangas State University in Alangilan, Batangas City.  The second video honors Marichu Liwag Carstensen in her advocacy and philanthropy as the founder of Lipeño Youth Art Club while the third video recognized former Lipa City Tourism Council president Chito Segismundo.  The fourth and fifth videos recognized the mentors and mentees of Grupo Sining Batangueño respectively.  The mentors Joseph Albao, Rex Tatlonghari and Randy Macalindong shared their insights on challenges experienced when starting up as an artist.  The mentees of the group include 18-year old Zhyra Nedia, glow in the dark artist Ryan De Roxas, hyper realist Robert Tiaño, cake maker Donna Gay Villegas and tattoo artist Migs Deniola. The video of father and son Jun and Bo Cumagun of Lipa City established how genes can influence creativity and artistry.

Part of the My City My SM My Art campaign is a community based workshop and contest where young student artists are taught of new skills and techniques.  At the end of the workshop the output of the participants will serve as their entry for the contest. This time, Marichu Liwag Carstensen was hired by SM to do a four-day training workshop in tile mosaic for ten art students.  Announced winner is 17 year old Jonas Palma.  Judging the art works are Joseph Albao, Luchie Resurreccion and Atty. Sylvia Marasigan.

Also present during the launching are Lipa City councilor Gwendolyn Wong, Lipa City Administrator Atty. Leo Latido, Provincial Tourism Council Officer Atty. Sylvia Marasigan, Lipa Tourism Council President Minnie Atienza, SM’s Senior VP for Marketing Communications Millie Dizon and SM’s Senior Assistant Vice President for Operations Jason Terrenal.

A celebration of Philippine visual arts – painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and filmmaking, My City, My SM, My Art is a joint project of SM, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, the Shell Companies of the Philippines, and the Philippine Star with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and Centerstage Production.

My City, My SM, My Art brings art and people together showcasing the works of masters, modernists, and millennials around the SM Supermalls.  Advocating art for all, the team works with communities to mount exhibits, workshops, and contests in key cities around the Philippines.
