Jona Krista Restobar: A Place to Try Your Filipino and Mexican Favorites

Being Pinoy, it goes without saying that we love Filipino food. I have yet to meet someone who hates sizzling and grilled Filipino food. Thanks to the Spanish and Mexican influence on Pinoy food, a lot of us love Mexican food as well. At the very least, we get this craving for Mexican food every now and then.

Generally speaking, Filipino and Mexican cuisines are two of the most satisfying cuisines out there. They’re rich in flavor and are very filling, mainly because they’re eaten with rice and other equally-filling carbs.

The thing about these two cuisines is they go so well together, so a restaurant offering Filipino and Mexican favorites shouldn’t be surprising. Now, we have a place where we can try and enjoy our Filipino and Mexican favorites at the same spot here in Lipa City.

I mean, a burrito meal with a chicken sisig platter sounds divine right now.

They’re located at the Dayton Food Park. They have a two-storey building so it should be big enough to accommodate big groups and parties.

Trying their Bestsellers

We asked for their bestsellers and we started with a couple of their appetizers. First came the pepper wedges (Php 150), which I tried for the first time. It’s a twist to the popular dinamita. It uses bell pepper that is smothered with a cream cheese-mayo mixture that had the perfect ratio that I was initially confused if it was cream cheese or mayo.

A dish with this so much cream cheese or mayo should be overwhelming, but the bittersweet taste of the green bell pepper provided a nice taste contrast. The bread crumbs made sure that every bite wouldn’t be all gooey.

The chicken sisig (Php 90) came next in a sizzling platter, with the mayo mixture enticing us to dig in.

Now I know that this is supposed to be an appetizer (or pulutan), but we couldn’t resist eating it with rice. It sure helps that the Mexican rice (Php 40) goes so well with the chicken sisig and with all their dishes for that matter.

The Mexican rice sticks so well to the creamy and silky texture of the chicken sisig.

We also tried a couple of their sizzling seafood favorites. I’m a big tuna fan so I’m pretty happy with their sizzling tuna (Php 220).

It comes with Mexican rice and big chunks of tuna in a sweet and tangy sauce.

We also got the sizzling pusit (php 200).

Just like the tuna, it comes with Mexican rice and the same sauce. The squid was tender.

At this point, we’re ready to try their Mexican bestsellers. The burrito (Php 220) came first.

I was pleasantly surprised at its size. It looks bigger than the picture I saw on their fan page and is packed with all the good things that you’ll find in a Mexican burrito. It has a good amount of beef and Mexican rice.

We also tried the tacos (Php 200).

Each serving comes with 3 tacos. I loved the homemade salsa. Its freshness complemented the meaty beef well.
